The action of the documentary takes place in the early nineties, just after the fall of communism in

Eastern Europe. Each month, a couple who lives on the Danish island of Mandø take in Polish

children from Silesia, giving them a short break from life-threatening pollution in their city. Unlike

in other European cities, a large steel mill operates in the centre of the City where the children live.

Decades of heavy industry makes it difficult to breathe. Mandø’s pristine nature is in absolute

contrast to the strongly industrialised Silesia, which by many is called the Triangle of Death. Here

the death rate of children is eight times greater than in Scandinavia. The film unit accompanied the

children when they returned home to investigate the area where 4ó million people live in the

shadow of death.
